The ECOWAS has over the years achieved remarkable success in consolidating peace, security and sustainable Democracy in the region.

Under the Supplementary Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance (2001) and the ECOWAS Conflict Prevention Framework (ECPF) 2008, the Commission has established relevant provisions to assist Member States in the preparation of credible election. This assistance has been by way of financial and technical support.

To consolidate the democratic gains, the Commission, as provided in Article 54 of the ECPF has taken steps to evaluate the level of contribution of successful election to democratic growth.

As elections are an essential component of a functioning democracy, actions supporting elections have been achieve by ECOWAS to foster peace and development in the region.

Against this backdrop the Commission efforts under Article 12 of the Supplementary Protocol has helped in no small measures to sustain confidence in electoral processes. This confidence becomes evidence in the level of acceptance of the ECOWAS Election Observation Missions to the various countries in the region.

Electoral Assistance to Members States therefore is a vital part of the ECOWAS approach to promote Democracy, Human Right and the Rule of Law.
